English
Because of the dedication and
inspiration of my high school English teacher, great
desired to follow her example. A full scholarship
allowed me to earn a B.S. degree in English and French
from East Carolina College in Greenville, N.C. Since
graduation I have been privileged to share with many
young people a subject that I consider to be vital to
anyone" s life. For nine years I taught in public
schools in North Carolina, Arkansas, and South Carolina.
Since then my work has been in Christian schools in
North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina. Currently,
I am teaching at Mt. Calvary Christian Academy. It is my
desire to prepare each student for future academic and
spiritual needs.
The A Beka Book curriculum is used in the
English classes that I teach. Each class memorizes a
variety of poems on a regular basis. The spelling
lessons teach the basic rules and introduce words
commonly used in speaking and writing. The vocabulary
study, derived from the literature books, requires the
student to learn the pronunciation, definition,
synonyms, antonyms, prefixes, roots, and suffixes of the
words. Exercises reinforce the definitions and uses of
the words in literature. The traditional grammar gives a
solid foundation which prepares the students for
college, vocations, and choices involving spiritual and
financial decisions. Various forms of compositions are
introduced, illustrated, and practiced. Questions
requiring original writing appear frequently on quizzes
and tests. Literary selections from famous writers of
all nationalities and eras entertain and educate the
students in philosophy, critical thinking, figurative
language, interpretation of ideas, and the basic
elements of literature. This challenging program appeals
to the academically talented and raises the level of
achievement of the struggling student.
